    WHO IS CELT ISLAM

Abdullah Hamzah aka”Celt Islam” is an English convert to Islam, Sufi and a member of the northern British alternative dub/breaks outfit “Nine Invisibles ” and ” Analogue Fakir ” . Celt-Islam uses a fusion of music from Dub/Electro/Drum andBass and collaborates it with Islamic/world grooves to create a Dub driven dance crossover.

Celt Islam creates music in quite a diverse range of styles and genres. He produces Sufi inspired Global Grooves to create a sometimes Meditative Dub that transfixes everybody who comes across it, to Electro-Dub driven Drum and Bass to satisfy the dance world.

The only analogy that could be drawn to similar artists is that to Mercan Dede but only in terms of concept…Sufism…whereas the sounds, image and distinction of musical styles between the two could not be further apart.

    ” When it comes to drum and bass Celt Islam is the only Muslim artist worth mentioning. Having consistently released quality material he is never afraid to venture into new areas. Heavily influenced by the sounds of Sufi mysticism and traditional Arabic and Asian music, Celt Islam (the name being derived from his racial and religious background) is in a world of his own. ” { Tawheed is Unity }

    COLLABORATORS

Celt Islam is probably best known to date for his work in the Sufi-Dub genre which he is probably alone in trying to create and to help define as a sub-genre.

He does so in collaboration with some respected names such as Inder Goldfinger, tabla player for Stone Roses legend, Ian Brown’s band and Natacha Atlas and Dawoud Kringle who has recorded and performed with the likes of Lauryn Hill.

Celt Islam has also worked with many musicians and artists including Mick Reed { 1919 , Ship of fools and Nine Invisibles } , Bongo Chilli , D Bo General and DanMan { Iration Steppers }.

Celt Islam also has some remixes under his belt for the likes of Karen David and is currently working on remixes in collaboration with DJ UMB from Generation Bass as THE SUFI DUBSTARS.

    PREVIOUS RELEASES

Celt Islam has released his track Time/Space on 12″ { Kritical Mass records}and appeared on many compilations from the Buddha Lounge { Shisha Soundsystem }, Sounds from the big town { Chocolate fireguard } , Quest and Demokrazy on Substream Records { Sweden } and the track Dervish on the new Cafe paradiso: Park Lane Presents Luxury Chilled Grooves compilation compiled by Shisha Soundsystem.

Celt Islam has also recently released his anti war dub track ” Gaza” which appears on the VIVA PALESTINA THE ALBUM  compilation which features artists as Drew McConnell from Babyshambles, Lowkey,  to name a few.

    LOOP PACKAGE

Celt Islam has just released his producer sound pack on loopmasters.com called Celt Islam Sufi Dub Soundsystem which is a fusion of music from Dub/Electro/Drum and Bass and collaborates it with Islamic/world grooves to create a unique and mighty Dub driven dance crossover sound.

The Celt Islam Sufi Sample Loop package features the vocal talents of Bongo Chilli and Danman both of which are established artists from Jamaica now living in UK. Also, featured on the loop package is live percussion from Inder Goldfinger and Abdal Wahid Mursaleen both experts in Ethnic and oriental musicial instruments and provide some original loops made from Tabla and Dholak plus some rare recordings of Sitar loops by Dawoud Kringle aka The Renegade Sufi and Saz played by Sufi artist Mustafa Daood.

    BELLY HOP!

    November 24th, 2009

belly dancer2 BELLY HOP! Generation Bass

That guy called GHANDI who I met last week over the Qawwali Dubstep kerfuffle has done this very COOL mix, which I’ll say a little bit more about below.

But first heading back to the Qawwali Dubstep topic:

Although I felt that Ghandi was not right on the first occassion about his opinion on the Dub Factory track he put forward as Qawwali Dubstep, he has since come up with a real corker.

It’s a much earlier Qawwali Dubstep track than the one by Sufi Dubstars.  It’s by Geiom and is called “Zalim Maar Daala” and it came out in or about 2007.  So a big up to him.  I’m sure there’s likely to be many more and so keep them coming in please.

Coming back to his mix, he later wrote to me after the Sufi Dubstars post to tell me that he’d just realized that I was involved in doing one of his favourite compilations, The Beginners Guide To Belly Dance.  I co-compiled this with my partner in the Shisha Sound System along with some of our dancer friends almost 2 years ago.

Futhermore, that he’d built this mix around that compilation!!!!

So, of course I thought it was more than worthy to grace our blog as it’s a damn fine mix too and plus we just don’t put up enough Middle Eastern stuff on this blog. Well, that’s more to do with the fact that the Middle Eastern scene is a little stale at the minute.  But all that might be about to change if a special project I’m proposing to play a key role in actually happens, more on that another time, if ever….lol…

Anyway, I can’t tell you much about this guy called Ghandi save for that he has exceptional taste :-)

I can also tell you about a hilarious story that pre-empted the GHANDI name for him, well let him tell you in his own words:

I go to India every year. One time I went out with a Mohican and every where I went people, esp. richshaw wallahs, would shout out “Mogambo! Mogambo kush a wah! Bote bote kush a wah!” quoting Amrish Puri who played the villain in Mr India.

Anyhow, back in Delhi after several months of being called Amrish and Mogambo the joke was starting to wear thin so one morning I nipped out in just a t-shirt, longee & flip flops to have my head shaved.

Now I’m skinny and I wear round glasses and as soon as all these driver wallahs who I’ve known for time saw me they cracked up and renamed me Ghandi. My mates who witnessed this thought this was hilarious so I’ve been Ghandi ever since, though I spell it differently. True story.

    lol…….:-))

It’s a very tasty mix and although I’m very familiar with all the material on this mix, it makes for a great change from the ever so samey mixes coming out at the minute, so NICE ONE GHANDI!

It’s by one of my favourite bands, TINDERSTICKS.

I stuck the full epic 14 minute version on one of my commercial releases about a year ago, CAFE PARADISO.  Some of you who watch the Soprano’s might recall it from one of the most famous eposides of that brilliant series.
