Hey, we promised you an exclusive interview from the KUDURO DONS and here we have it.
The GODFATHER OF KUDURO,TONY AMADO is interviewed by the GODFATHER OF KUDURO IN THE WEST,FREDERIC GALLIANO.
Galliano (our brother, whose a very good looking boy too…hahahaha) did this exclusively for your homies’ GENERATION BASS!
Tony was in France to do a live gig and some dance performance show-cases and luckily Fred was there with him too and took the time out especially to do this short “fun” interview for US!
What can we say, THANK U Mr Galliano and Mr. Amado!
Wow, it means a hell of a lot to us to be mentioned in such ground-breaking and innovative company. Tony and Fred are artists, who we have admired for a long time!
Not only do we have a short video interview for you but also a free inedit TONY AMADO track for download!!!
As promised to you earlier today, Mr Frederic Galliano has been a true homie and sent us a couple of unreleased BONUS BEATS from his recent Kuduro Sound System album to give away as free downloads.
So you can just slot them into your sets or mash them up with something or create a remix out of them or something completely new, it up to you.
The Godfather of Kuduro in the West, Frederic Galliano was kind enough to send me his new Kuduro Sound System album recently together with a nice t-shirt.
I promise you Fred I’m gonna get that pic done of me or a hot chick in your tee and send it to you as you’ve requested for your Kuduro Sound System fan page
He is presently spending some time with THE GODFATHER of Kuduro, Tony Amado, in France and he also kindly offered to get me hooked up with him for an exclusive interview. Problem is I can’t speak or write in Portugese and Tony can’t read, write or speak in English and so I’m not sure anything will come of that with our depleted or non-existent resources. Big shame.
Ok, man you know what I’ve always liked and respected about Frederic Galliano, is not only does he pioneer new sounds but also he’s not one to follow the pack, fashion or trends.
His new album does precisely that too, it does not follow your Buraka Som Sistema’s or Zakee Kuduro’s but stays faithful to his own unique vision and in most parts, it does work.
It’s an album which also tries to pioneer a new and unique Electronic European Club sound fused to traditional Angolan Kuduro beats. It even contains possibly the first Kuduro track with Arabic inflexions called “Golfo Arabico”, well it’s the first one I’ve heard, so a big up Fred.
The album consists of 16 original tracks by the Kuduro Sound System and comes in the form of a DJ mix. It’s an ESSENTIAL album to add to your Kuduro collection for sure.
Fred has also been kind enough to offer a free cut from the album as a free download exclusively to yours truly, Generation Bass.
So I chose track 9 “Danca Wa Ya Ya” feat. Pinta Tirru.
I think today has to be one of the most momentous days in our short history.
We’ve brought you 3 exclusives and 2 of those are worldwide exclusives. Not from DJ Tom in your local city centre but by established, innovative, ground-breaking and world famous DJ’s!
So far today, we’ve had what I, DJ UMB, regards as one of the best mixes ever by the Bandish Projekt, a new Bassnectar download and now this, perhaps the first ever recorded Kuduro mix by a western DJ!!!
All that seems to be missing is a new Sonido Del Principe jam
All this, in the week of the first ever GENERATION BASS FESTIVALin Tilburg, Holland, which kicks off this Friday through to Sunday!!
Man we know how to celebrate in style! I’m not there yet, I’ll be on my way this Thursday. I hope you can make it there too and if you do, do me 1 favour, come up and say Wassup!
Sorry to say all of the above on your post Monsieur Galliano
Anyway, on to the main action here, Galliano sent me this mix through a few days ago and man it’s brilliant.
It’s NOT anything to do with his recent Kuduro Sound System material but is an old skool Kuduro classics mix and man it rocks.
He did this mix way back in 2005!!!
4 years later and we’ve only just started doing this sort of stuff. Hence my “justified” bigging up of Mr Galliano in previous posts and confirming his status as the GODFATHER OF KUDURO in the West.
It’s the FIRST ever Kuduro mix he did after his first visit to Angola in 2005. It’s one he did for pleasure and not for a commercial release. He says it’s old skool but that it’s still interesting to him.
He explains that when he played and recorded this in a live gig in France in a pub, the crowd were intrigued and did not quite understand it but felt seduced by it. He further adds that they asked him if it was Brazilian music!!!!
Man, even to this very day, people in the West still do not quite understand Kuduro yet, albeit, it has started to develop a small but growing following. However, in my mind it’s still perhaps 2-3 years ahead of it’s time now before it might catch on in a bigger way. Yet Fred was doing it 4 years ago and so that makes him around 8 years ahead of the game!
Man, I think it’s a really great mix cause I still love old skool Kuduro. So it’s a great honour for us to be the first to make this mix available.
Perhaps the first ever recorded Kuduro mix by a Westerner, now that’s HISTORICAL!
We did promise you loads of amazing exclusive stuff from Mr Galliano but the best is yet to come, Watch this space!
That’s our main man Frederic Galliano nestled in between the African Divas which formed part of his previous project a little while back.
Of course in the past few years he has been immersed in the KUDURO scene. Indeed, as I said a while back on a feature about him HERE, he is rightfully regarded as being one of the first, if not the first, westerner(s) to champion Kuduro music and bring it over here to western ears. Hence, why he is regarded as the GODFATHER OF KUDURO in the West.
I just wish some of the current Kuduro hipsters on the scene would acknowledge his influence in this respect a little bit more at times.
I know Toy Selectah has at times experienced a similar disservice in connection with the history of Nu-Cumbia.
I, for one, think it’s only fair that tastemakers like Frederic and Toy should be rightfully afforded their deserved respect, well for being there first. Some acknowledgment of that is always important cause man it’s hard work and also sacrificial bringing new foreign genres to home shores.
Man if it was easy we’d all be doing it wouldn’t we but it’s not at the best of times. Plus they have both caressed it with love and a passion and not treated it as a fashion statement or some passing fad or exploited it for their own selfish needs!
Anyway, we’re going to be bringing you loads more about Fred’s current KUDURO SOUND SYSTEM project very soon and trust me it’s gonna BE BIG AND VERY SPECIAL!!!!
For now, we can offer you a remix that he did a little while back of Bang Bang that was especially commissioned by DIPLO. Yes, I know we’ve heard 100’s of different remixes of that track but man listen to this one by Fred as he gives it a Funky Tropical African flava. Man I love the bassline on this baby, which kinda reminds me of Fela Kuti.
Whilst we’re here, some links to our main man which I would highly recommend you to check out. For some of you it might turn out to be your own min-history lesson in modern African music tastemakers, with the greatest of respect.
To many of us KUDURO became a familiar byword for cutting edge African dance music with the arrival of BURAKA SOM SISTEMA.
However, it’s arguable that the Western GODFATHER of it all is the GREAT French DJ/Producer FREDERIC GALLIANO.
Indeed the first time I’d ever heard the word KUDURO some years ago…the name FREDERIC GALLIANO closely followed behind.
You can read up more about this on his MY SPACE and also listen to some of his great cuts on there too. You can also catch a good interview with him going back to 2007 HERE.
This is something to really look forward to. It’s going to be in the format of a DJ MIX and will contain brand new cuts of KUDURO in the FG KUDURO SOUND SYSTEM stylee…
You can hear some KUDURO SOUND SYSTEM cuts here at their MY SPACE.
Here’s a great vid to get you into the mood and check out the album when it drops…WE CANNOT WAIT FOR IT.
