I’m back baby!

Now fully married so ladies: too late!

I’ve been in Montenegro on my honeymoon & I’d like to say that I went and sought out all the most underground crazy music happening there but, well, I didn’t, I drank cocktails and went to the beach and did, y’know, honeymoon stuff. 2 recommendations I do have though: Radio D+ which has balkan pop, turbofolk and crazy gypsy synth tunes on constant rotation, and The Pirate Bar in Perast which is probably the best place I know of in the world to go for a drink.

And man it’s all been kicking off while I’ve been gone, controversy after controversy over at the Moombahton FB group… You would have thought the slower tempo would mellow folks out, but maybe we need something a little faster to work our aggression out… Anyway on to the mixxxes, first up is a dude at the centre of some (there seems to be have been loads) of the controversy, Lightning EyeZ with an epic mix of everything, then DJ Badre with some Balkan house, The Waz Experience out of Austria brings us a Beach Hop selection and finally Ginger Shinobi joins the Moombah fam with his first Moombahton mix…

Lightning EyeZ

So, as UMB posted earlier, Lightning EyeZ just launched the Spring of Moombahton compilation, accompanied by some extensive writing on Moombahton, music, sustainability, the future, global conspiracies, and anything else you care to mention, which I personally found fairly baffling and which sparked a pretty heated debate. Well massive respect to the dude, in the face of some fairly derisive comments from various people, myself included, he responded with positivity and friendliness without ever backing down, so I thought it only fair to respond to his comment:

I really really really love this discussion going on below … however as opposed to my beliefs on the world… i would much rather know what y’all think of this mix?

That’s the problem with including an 8000 word essay on your worldview with your mix – it’s a little distracting :) Anyway I really don’t want to get in to that, right here our only agenda is good music. The only thing I’m going to pick up on – since it is about music – is the idea that the ‘New Genre’ Wildstyle (as Lightning EyeZ calls it) – which is about the crossing of genre boundaries, mixing up all tempos & styles & timbres – is something which is growing out of the Moombahton scene. Well surely that’s what the Global Bass / World 2.0 / whatever (call it Wildstyle if you like) scene has always been about – it’s the Global Bass scene which has fostered Moombahton, not the other way round.

Anyway, bottom line, this mix is fyah, a crazy blend of moombah, global bass, electro house, rock, cheesy classics, and everything in between. And it’s EPIC (well, you might argue it’s just loooong, for me he could have achieved the same in a third of the time). I still think the dude is bonkers, but he’s also full of positivity and energy and damn fine tunes which overall is an excellent combo…

Hailing from the UK originally he’s now based in Dubai and flying the flag for real hip hop in the Middle East. Today being Ash Wednesday, people all over the UK spent last night munching pon pancakes (is this a tradition anywhere else?) whereas people in the Trinidad spent the last two days wining pon each other & having their party of the year. Not sure where I’d rather be to be honest: pancakes are awesome. But I suppose you could go to carnival then have pancakes when you got back. Or maybe they have jerk pancakes there?

Mix Master Moss

I’m generally a bit hesistant to post moombahton mixes at the moment – don’t get me wrong, like every other dedicated bandwagon-jumper I think it’s awesome, but it’s just that it’s still such a young genre which has achieved popularity & hype disproportionate to its age, resulting in the fact that moombahton DJ mixes probably outnumber actual moombahton tunes by about 2 to 1 – it’s therefore hard to find a moombahton mix which offers anything unique whatsoever. Mix Master Moss has delivered the goods with this little mix though, blending some usual-moombah-suspects with a few african hip hop / kwaitoesque tunes to give a genuinely different take on the genre – even though half these tunes are on every other moombahmix out there..!

I’m slowly getting back to the daily routine over here, after the complete and utter chaos in the last couple of weeks due to the incubate festival and our part in that, the Generation Bass Event! It was really amazing meeting so many of our fav artists in the flesh and swapping warstories with guys like DJ BEWARE and the SCHLACHTHOFBRONX dudes…

Also I can tell you right now that we are doing another edition of this thang NEXT YEAR! So get ready for another global meltdown in the weekend of 17/18/19 SEPTEMBER 2010. I’ve been having a JOKER day today and listening to some of his great stuff including one of my all-time favourites DIGI-DESIGN.

That track just seems to be one of the Anthems for me this year.  I celebrated our 250,000.00 Generation Bass visitor with the track and also it reminds me most of the FIRST Generation Bass Festival a few weeks back.  I promise you I’m going to do a short write up about just how brilliant the festival was.  I’m just waiting for Vince to do his first cause man save for me turning up on the day, opening up the dj’ing on 2 of the nights and meeting and greeting everyone, I did nothing else, he planned, executed and delivered it all :-)

Anyway, Joker was also there playing after RESO (who murdered it) and man Joker is just in a different league altogether and he’s still only in his early 20′s.  He dropped Digi-Design at the Festival and man for me it was like HEAVEN.  I did not know whether to dance, smile or bawl my eyes out (now get a hold of your emotions you big girls blouse)!

So, I posted Digi-design on my facebook page today and co-incidentally a few hours later, unless these guys are watching my every move…hahahha, the Globalibre guys, who also happened to turn up at the Festival, posted one of his remixes today.

I’m only kiddin’, man the Globalibre guys are my bro’s man and we shared great times together in Essaouira this year and also now in Tilburg and I ALWAYS ENJOY THEIR COMPANY AND BANTER SO MUCH!!!

However, I must confess I have never heard this remix before and for me it just got even greater cause it mentions my home city Birmingham in the track and it’s by Hard Fi remixed by Joker.  So thanks Axe.l and O.live.r from Globalibre for introducing me to this BRILLIANT REMIX.

That’s not all though, cause here’s a remixed version of Digi-Design I picked up from the Chrome Kids Blog, which is good but nowhere near as good as the original.

And so the original also follows in vid format and marries to the above image beautifully.
