    WHO IS CELT ISLAM

Abdullah Hamzah aka”Celt Islam” is an English convert to Islam, Sufi and a member of the northern British alternative dub/breaks outfit “Nine Invisibles ” and ” Analogue Fakir ” . Celt-Islam uses a fusion of music from Dub/Electro/Drum andBass and collaborates it with Islamic/world grooves to create a Dub driven dance crossover.

Celt Islam creates music in quite a diverse range of styles and genres. He produces Sufi inspired Global Grooves to create a sometimes Meditative Dub that transfixes everybody who comes across it, to Electro-Dub driven Drum and Bass to satisfy the dance world.

The only analogy that could be drawn to similar artists is that to Mercan Dede but only in terms of concept…Sufism…whereas the sounds, image and distinction of musical styles between the two could not be further apart.

    ” When it comes to drum and bass Celt Islam is the only Muslim artist worth mentioning. Having consistently released quality material he is never afraid to venture into new areas. Heavily influenced by the sounds of Sufi mysticism and traditional Arabic and Asian music, Celt Islam (the name being derived from his racial and religious background) is in a world of his own. ” { Tawheed is Unity }

    COLLABORATORS

Celt Islam is probably best known to date for his work in the Sufi-Dub genre which he is probably alone in trying to create and to help define as a sub-genre.

He does so in collaboration with some respected names such as Inder Goldfinger, tabla player for Stone Roses legend, Ian Brown’s band and Natacha Atlas and Dawoud Kringle who has recorded and performed with the likes of Lauryn Hill.

Celt Islam has also worked with many musicians and artists including Mick Reed { 1919 , Ship of fools and Nine Invisibles } , Bongo Chilli , D Bo General and DanMan { Iration Steppers }.

Celt Islam also has some remixes under his belt for the likes of Karen David and is currently working on remixes in collaboration with DJ UMB from Generation Bass as THE SUFI DUBSTARS.

    PREVIOUS RELEASES

Celt Islam has released his track Time/Space on 12″ { Kritical Mass records}and appeared on many compilations from the Buddha Lounge { Shisha Soundsystem }, Sounds from the big town { Chocolate fireguard } , Quest and Demokrazy on Substream Records { Sweden } and the track Dervish on the new Cafe paradiso: Park Lane Presents Luxury Chilled Grooves compilation compiled by Shisha Soundsystem.

Celt Islam has also recently released his anti war dub track ” Gaza” which appears on the VIVA PALESTINA THE ALBUM  compilation which features artists as Drew McConnell from Babyshambles, Lowkey,  to name a few.

    LOOP PACKAGE

Celt Islam has just released his producer sound pack on loopmasters.com called Celt Islam Sufi Dub Soundsystem which is a fusion of music from Dub/Electro/Drum and Bass and collaborates it with Islamic/world grooves to create a unique and mighty Dub driven dance crossover sound.

The Celt Islam Sufi Sample Loop package features the vocal talents of Bongo Chilli and Danman both of which are established artists from Jamaica now living in UK. Also, featured on the loop package is live percussion from Inder Goldfinger and Abdal Wahid Mursaleen both experts in Ethnic and oriental musicial instruments and provide some original loops made from Tabla and Dholak plus some rare recordings of Sitar loops by Dawoud Kringle aka The Renegade Sufi and Saz played by Sufi artist Mustafa Daood.

Girls FRIDAY NIGHT DJ MIXFEST Generation Bass

It’s Generation Bass (as in ‘base’ and not the fish) and it’s Friday Night, it can only mean one thing, DJ Mixfesssssssst!

This mix might just turn out to be one of my favourite mixes of this year, it’s original, unique, contains good source material and is quite inventive and the flow is cool. Oh, it also includes tracks by Beats Antique, a band I really love and who I have worked with in the past on a couple of my compilation releases as Shisha Sound System.

It’s by a guy called FLETCHER who comes from South Afreaka!!!

I LOVE it and I’m sure you will do too!!!

Unfortunately the only downside is that it’s not downloadable!!!!  Why some DJ’s still insist on not allowing downloads in this day and age is beyond my comprehension but he can be forgiven for that cause the mix ROCKS!!!

Anybody who knew me (UMB) before Generation Bass will know I had around 10 commercial compilation releases which are still available worldwide.

3 of those were Tango compilations soaking in the Nu Tango scene and some of the trad stuff too.

One of my most exciting new discoveries during that period of Electro Tango was a beautiful young woman from Argentina called Vivi Pedraglio and I licensed a bunch of her material for the compilations. She has since become a good friend of mine and is simply now known to me as “VIVI BABY”.

Not only does Vivi create Electro Tango masterpieces but she also does a variety of other stuff too under her other alter- ego’s, DIAMANDA (Club) and HIJAS DEL RIGOR (Experimental/Downtemp/Ambient).

Here’s a gorgeous downtempo mix she laid down a couple of years back and please do go to her My Space to check out her Electro Tango stuff cause it’s awesome.

Is Tommi a Bender? who cares but he does brilliant Balkan Nights in Amsterdam.

Here’s his latest Balkan mix soaking in the real atmosphere on one of his nights and staying true to the more trad and gypsy punk style stuff as opposed to bastardized watered down club stuff, which I usually do..lol

On request a new mixtape with just “BALKAN”-music…it ended up in a sorta “greatest hits/best of..”, so it gives an impression of the balkanparty scene in the Netherlands..

SUFI DUBSTARS – QAWWALI DUBSTEP…THE FIRST EVER?

    November 23rd, 2009

    TURKEY-ISTANBUL-ISLAM-DERVISH-RAMADAN-FEATURE

    Dubstep Monday @ Generation Bass

I posted this mix last week and I also claimed that it contained perhaps the first ever QAWWALI DUBSTEP track by the SUFI DUBSTARS!

It’s the final track on this mix:

RUMI CALLING : SUFI DUB by djumb

I wasn’t 100% sure when I made this claim.  I made it without having done any extensive research and just on the basis of my own personal knowledge.

I’ve been listening to dubstep for the past few years and more recently I’ve been getting into more aggressive forms of dubstep and exploring the global or transnational dubstep scene as you can tell from my recent mixes and posts on Dubstep Mondays on this blog .

I’ve never come across any Qawwali Dubstep and the track Sufi Dubstars have done is the first, IMHO.

I’ve come across Qawwali Dub, there’s loads of that about, Gaudi etc etc.  I’ve also come across Dubstep Ghazals which is the sort of thing Bandish Projekt incorporate into their repertoire.  But I’ve never come across any Qawwali Dubstep!

Anyhow, once I’d posted that and made the claim too, a few people responded saying, the Sufi Dubstars track is not the first Qawwali Dubstep, it’s been done before and I was pointed into the direction of 2 examples.

The first person to comment was our good mate LOWDJO who said this:

pinch made a great qawwali-dubstep track some years ago, great interpretation.. has been in my collection ever since!

    DOWNLOAD TRACK

    D/L QAWWALI – DJ PINCH

    LISTEN TO THE TRACK:

The second person to comment was a guy called GHANDI..lol…who said this:

Great showcase for the new album, I need this cd!

I beg to differ, but I think the first qawwali dubstep track was ‘Kaise Guzar Rahi Hai’ by The Dub Factory. From 1998! It’s in this mix:

Masala mix refix (bhangra, qawwali dub, desi reggae & dubstep) by ghandi

So I thought ok..maybe I’ve got it wrong and I accepted the feedback on face value and left it at that.

But then out of curiosity,  I listened to the 2 examples sent to me.

Ghandi’s example is where I have left the comment on his mixtape.  So I listened and thought man, that ain’t dubstep.  It’s more like dub/dub reggae and is definitely not dubstep.  Yes it contains Qawwali vocals and is dubbed out but def not dubstep!

So I then listened to Lowdjo’s track by DJ Pinch.  It’s called Qawwali and def has a dubstep vibe and a hint of a Harmonium sample but it ain’t Qawwali!

Qawwali’s should (if not as a MUST) contain a lead vocal.

    The word Qawwali means…

a musician or singer who sings the hymns or praises of God and dictums of the prophets, saints and other holy personages in Arabic, Persian, Urdu and even Hindustani composed by reputed Sufi saints and poets.

    here’s another defintion:

Qawwali is the traditional form of Islamic song found in India and Pakistan.  The word qawwali is derived from the Arabic word Qaol which means “axiom” or “dictum”.  A Qawwal is one who sings qawwali, or the dictums of the prophets and praises of God.  The Qawwali is closely linked to the spiritual and artistic life of northern India and Pakistan.

So I’m afraid that the DJ Pinch track is just Qawwali in name and not in feel and plus it contains no vocal at all and hence cannot be Qawwali Dubstep.

DOES IT ALL MATTER..no, not really.  I mean I don’t really care that much as to who is the first to do it BUT I just don’t know anybody else that has done it before.

I ain’t no expert on qawwali music or an ethnomusicologist or a musical historian and as I have said the research I have done is very limited.  So if anybody does have any other examples of Qawwali Dubstep please be sure to let me know.

    TURKEY-ISTANBUL-ISLAM-DERVISH-RAMADAN-FEATURE

Just dropped this mix today after CELT ISLAM sent me a bunch of new unreleased tracks last night and requested that I drop a mix with them.

So I did a few hours ago :-)

The material includes the first ever worldwide streaming of a remix by the SUFI DUBSTARS, me and Celt.  It might be the first ever QAWWALI DUBSTEP track to grace this planet.  This remix is coming out next month on the Earthsync label.

Don’t forget Celt’s album DERVISH is out on release right now and can be picked up from the Urban Sedated Records website alongside the usual online and physical outlets.

As the mix contains exclusive unreleased material, I’m afraid it’s STREAM only!  :-(

And if you don’t know who RUMI is, check him out!

Our boy WAER ROCK comes up with a beautiful down tempo mix with a very original and unique feel.  That’s why we rate him and invited him to join us here to make contributions to posts from time to time.

Here’s what he says about this mix:

Downbeat in mood and tempo, Dourbeat is centered around trip hop with a strong, narrative composition and a broad array of instrumentation. But it also features a selection of similarly themed tracks with a focus on quality rather than genre. Moving beyond its roots in instrumental hip hop, Dourbeat includes leftfield dubbiness, classical, drum n’ bass, turbo dub and other hard to categorize songs. The mix also refuses to get too dogmatic in terms of speed, mood and vocals; occasionally dipping into mid-tempo electronica, uplifting lover’s rock, and rap.

    INDIA CALLING: DUBSTEP YAAR MIX!

    DUBSTEP MONDAYS @ GENERATION BASS

So last week we had a BRILLIANT mix incorporating some INDIAN DUBSTEP from DJ Coconuts from Tupolev Soundcrash.  Man, that was very well received.  So it’s gonna be kind of tough to follow that.

Anyhow, here’s my INDIAN DUBSTEP MIX, which showcases “some” of the Artists that I’ve been championing at this blog on DUBSTEP MONDAYS.  Some of these Artists I hope will appear on the proposed India Calling – Dubstep Compilation at some point next year.

These are tunes I’ve been blasting at most gigs I’ve done this year in the underground circuit with Tropical Tek House doing the rounds at other gigs.

As most of you know, I don’t spend more than a max of 1 hour 30 mins on a mix.  20 mins prep time for this one and then straight to recording it LIVE in my studio on my Pioneer CDJ’S- one cut- one take in real time fashion (unmastered).

I hope that the mix gives you an insight into just how great some of the stuff coming out of India is at present with standouts for me being Bandish Projekt, Deaf Bass Twins and Nucleya.

Some of the other artists are not Indian like 16 Bit, Barbarix, Celt Islam and Datsik but man it’s cool to hear them embracing these vybz and to such astounding effect too.  Plus the mix is not 100% Indian as it incorporates some Arabic inflexions too, not too much, just a tiny bit!

Of course the idea for the India Calling Compilation is that it will include indigenous Indian Artists only, born and bred there, to showcase its home-grown talent.  So many of the tracks on the mixtape won’t make it.

Just so you know, “Yaar” means “Mate” and so the title translates as “Dubstep, Mate”!

Just checked the charts at Fairtilizer this morning after uploading this mix yesterday and it’s placed as follows:

    NO. 1 – DJ MIX

    NO.1 – PUNK (hahaaha)

    NO.1 – World

    NO. 1 – All Genres

As I’ve said before, the Fairtilizer chart placings add little value to the quality indicator of a mix, save to say some peeps seem to appreciate it but I have seen some truly awful mixes top their charts before.  But as before, it always feels good to be No.1 in something, even if it’s only within a very narrow remit ;-)
