(Continued from part II)
Salsa is no longer a mere latin rhythm, it has had a natural evolution, as musicians and people who dance and listen to it, also have an immense source of influences.
We can have hundreds of great examples added to the ones we have had in PART I or PART II!!! So…I’m just gonna choose few i really think GB people should know and listen to DLC is a Salsa-funk mega Band from Berlin
LA REPUBLICA (as you can listen in their promo they do something they describe as NEO TROPICO) which is a mix of salsa, rock, atlantico, timba, hip hop, pacific folklore all in one HUGE BOMB!!
for JAZZ/SALSA/CUMBIA LOVERS we have PUERTO CANDELARIA!!! in my humble opinion one of the best (if not the best) ensemble nowadays in Colombia
That’s the wikiiid universe of our SALSA!!! No boundaries anymore!! From Jazz to funk, from Pacific and Cumbia, to descarga or guaguanco in seconds!!! NO WONDER WHY PEOPLE WHO STILL LISTEN TO EROTIC SALSA CAN’T ENJOY THIS RESURRECTION OF SALSA!!
NOTE:As usual in these kind of posts, many people to talk about, many bands missing, probably the most influential, so i hope people just don’t diss about my salsa post, as i am not a salsa connoisseur, everything i wrote are the bands i know and i listen to, i’d be very please to open more my GB posts to amazing latin fusion music, like recoveco, Buika or a whole post about Puerto Candelaria if you GB people like the idea..

Let’s start with something I’m being credited as having helped to define as a possible new sub-genre TRANSNATIONAL DUBSTEP.
I came out with this new name only 2 months ago but it’s already starting to become adopted by a whole new swathe of Dubstep producers who are lapping up the term.
Plus the existing Dubstep producers who were creating these vibes but finding it difficult just to classify it as merely Dubstep are now re-classifying their music as Transnational Dubstep
Even Wikipedia has quoted it in connection with how I chose to define the music of Liquid Stranger, see HERE.
So what is Transnational Dubstep? Well it’s essentially Dubstep that has an ethnic inflexion about it, be it Indian, Arabic, South American etc etc or as in this case here, Balkan.
And wow, I’ve created a term to define a sub-genre…lmfao…
So what Transnational Dubstep do we have here with this Balkan track, well it’s by Village Kollektiv who define it as SIDESTEP but they might now re-classify it after reading this!!!!
In fact you can download the whole EP release which includes a SHAZALAKAZOO remix too from HERE.
FISH FINGER
This guy FISH FINGER from Santa Cruz, USA was brought to my attention by my good friend Maria a.k.a. “CONNECTIONIST” one of the UK’s leading Dubstep Princesses. She uses mostly vinyl and always mixes it up live, no computers/software for our Dubstep Princess.
I first heard him on her radio show and immediately asked her who this guy was. You can catch/download her show of last night HERE:
Most recently I stuck up one of his free albums and got a bit of flack from peeps saying it was hardly something that could define Akira Kiteshi.
Well whilst I agree with that to an extent, he did make the album and it is Akira Kiteshi and so of course it defines an aspect of what he does but yes, ok, not that other aspect that we all love AK for, that is, DUBSTEP!
My excuse, well he had no free downloads and so how could I show that part cause all our readers like downloads and not streamers…lol
Well, that’s all changed now and you can grab yourself some BRILLIANT tracks showcasing the AK we all love him most for…DIRRRTY DUBSTEP!!!
This guy SOFT WASP makes what seems like a tune a day and they’re always interesting to listen to. Not always my cuppa but some I really, really love. He’s completely unpredictable……
…..you never know what he’s building in there….
More often than not though he comes up trumps!
So check out our Soft Wasp, he only bites once and then YOU die!
Checked these guys out after they left a comment on one of Caballo’s posts.
This is TRANSNATIONAL DUB as opposed to Dubstep with a real old skool DUB FLAVA permeating the whole track.
They reckon it’s quite Middle Eastern sounding but I’d say it only has the feintest hint of a Middle Eastern flava. More so in the Jewish tradition with those familiar guitar lines that most of us nowadays associate with bands like Balkan Beat Box and Soulico.
I bet most of us have seen, heard, bought or downloaded some of the “world music” (hate that name) from PUTUMAYO, LUAKA BOP or ANTI records.
However, fewer of us have heard about one lil’ label called PALENQUE RECORDS which has the most significant afropercussion and champeta artist in Latin America, and home of one the best bands in the whole world, sexteto tabala de palenque, who are without any doubt the deepest roots and first masters of everything we know now as cumbia and tambora.
Lucas Silva is a film maker and producer, owner and CEO of Palenque Records, and a great humble guy who took a break in his agenda to give GB and the whole world an interview and drop some of the finest acts from Colombia
GB: WHEN AND WHY DID YOU START PALENQUE RECORDS?
Lucas silva:I started palenque records in 1996 , recording the first album ever by Sexteto tabala, in a yard in Palenque – I’m originally a filmmaker , but music has always been my passion — during the shooting of my films I met lots of great afro-colombian artists living in misery , then I thought , If I don’t produce them , nobody will do ! So I started my label like that ..I didn’t know anything about music or the business..I just did it , cause it was urgent !
Why release the film and the records in france and europe, not USA?
LS:I don’t give a shit about Usa….I’m interested in African culture and I think Paris is a great place for that ..as Paris is the capital of Africa in Europe, and a place to meet lots of different people n’ world music ( I don’t like that name either but anyway…) works better in France and Europe that in USA, and there are better labels in Europe, in my opinion …..
GB:Do you think European people like this music because it sounds tribal, and exotic, made by direct slave descendants and not what it really is?
LS:Maybe, but also some Colombian people, and they look at their own music in an exotic way –Colombia is a very racist country, anyway…the colonial mentality is strong and people don’t even wanna get aware of that.
In Europe I found more interest and aid/help for this music, than anywhere in Colombia until now. But things are changing in Colombia now, afro colombian music & culture is more recognized
GB:LET’S TALK ABOUT CUMBIA
I’m sure you are already familiar with the neo cumbia fever all over the world, what do you think about this movement?
LS: Cool , they should keep on developing their music – cuz we’re now with champeta!-man just say to everybody : We’re coming soon to put everything upside down with some new music.
I’m going to release in UK –so Champeta people of the world wait the attack anytime soon! – a new revolution is comin ‘ !! THIS IS WHAT WE ARE DOING NOW!!!
GB:Sweet loco!! We can’t wait..Now, going back to san basilio, what real “cumbiamberos” or people from palenque think about this?
LS:They just don’t care…the range of music they listen is very large…but they are kinda indifferent about it –culturally talking , its really far away from the music they like..
GB:If you ask Colombian musicians, not only from cumbia, vallenato, but also from rock and fusion, they all have a huge respect for those masters palenqueros, like sexteto tabala, gaiteros de san jacinto, and now the africolombia and son palenque, so why they don’t get the recognition they deserve from the radio station or the newspapers?
LS:Because Colombia is a crazy democracy …the first who ever did a record of tabala was me….and I did it because I strongly believe that if haven’t done it , nobody would have done it – Palenque records has released til now :
The first record of Sexteto Tabala
First record of alegres ambulancias
First solo album by paulino salgado batata
First champeta compilation , released in Europe (France) and distributed everywhere
That’s why we are the pioneers of afro-colombian music, and nobody has done what we have done – we can be proud of that, but in the other side of it we’d like to have more competition, or more people working , doing new independent labels.
GB: I know, Back in the days, when Discos Fuentes, had the most significant cumbia players and the best tropical catalog in the whole planet, why they didn’t have ANY from the amazing stuff or artist you have in Palenque records if some of these guys are 70 years old and even older?
LS:Because records labels in Colombia have always forgotten the best part of being in a label – and because that’s my job , or not my job I mean it is my passion, to look for unknown artists, to do research , go to the villages or the big cities looking for them – record labels in Colombia have been blind about many aspects of our cultural identity – the only solution , the only real hope for Colombian music, it’s independent labels.
GB:How was the experience to produce and record, Paulino Salgado a.k.a Batata?
LS:Amazing, unforgettable, mystical , a real kinda crazy experience – as jimmy Hendrix says : are you experienced ?? I experienced that , and for me it was a honor to have worked with the KING OF KINGS, the royal master of musical societies everywhere…Paulino salgado batata
GB:And recording the sexteto tabala?
LS:Recording with tabala is another strong experience…. Their music is like a river , the river of history and poetry , and fighting for this band and for their great music, it’s simply a great pleasure for me,
GB:Batata, now is seen as the Godfather of colombian afropercussion, he wasn’t famous back in the days, so why he became that influential?
LS:He became that influential because he was one the highest graded teachers ever on the afro-colombian percussion –he became that famous because he was a big master even from his childhood , a kind of afro-colombian johnny lee hooker , or muddy waters..
NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT CHAMPETA!!
GB:why is Champeta seen like a low profile music? it doesn’t have to be with the fact that most of the artist and public is afro-colombian, or does it?
LS:Yeah ….it has a lot to do with the fact that is was a black ghetto music in the beginning, now it’s not only black of course, is a Caribbean costeno thing also…but colombia is still a post-colonial apartheid society ,and a cruel country with his best sons. champeta has been forbidden many times, and the sound systems have been attacked by hundreds of politicians and local administrations.
GB:in most of posh or rich clubs in bogota, people find, sort of hip (funny) to dance champeta and cumbia these days, does it make it easier for real champeteros to become mainstream?
LS:It is a process that would take longtime…as it as all about putting two different societies together —
GB:probably you don’t know, but here in GB, we released an Electro-Champeta few weeks ago, it was the first original electrochampeta loyal to the african roots like soukous and calypso, what do you think people from cartagena would think about it?
LS:People in Cartagena and the Caribbean are great melomanos, musical collectors, and they have a great ear, and knowledge of music — you should test your music over there!
When can we have a listen to the new sexteto tabala single?
Very sooon, Palenque Records is releasing their new album in about one month – we will send you an exclusive pre-release theme!!!
Now, and final question, is there any chance for Caballo, to get into those amazing compilation you do?
Keep on working in your music , and maybe in the future…it is the music that command us , we are just instruments of it …!
LS:FINALLY, I HAVE AN EXCLUSIVE NEWS FOR YOU ALL—

This, I liberated straight from our homie, SOUNDGOODS, word for word, track for track, fullstop to fullstop…. but the pic is mine..(ok, Coppola’s)…lol
Plus Caballo is gonna gatecrash my party further below, with full welcome, cause man he understands Colombian music much better than I ever could.
He’s gonna re-post that “INFAMOUS CUMBIANIZED” Fela Kuti cover of “Shakara” which I posted last year and that post was tweeted by none other than RIVA STARR & SAMIM!!!
Some of you have been on my case about this track and requesting it again because the previous link is broken. Broken cause we changed servers and I couldn’t be arsed to re-up it..lol. But it’s here again, better late than never.
Plus he’s gonna dig deeper into the “MEZA” psyche showcasing more of this man’s revolutionary take on Cumbia music!
Who knows, Michael Stipe from R.E.M. might just end up tweeting this one…lol…:-)
OVER TO SOUNDGOODS:
Lisandro Meza is one of Colombia’s most recognized Cumbia artists and played an important role in the evolution of Cumbia. He plays accordion, sings, and composes and is a master of vallenato sabanero, an accordion-driven style of music that originated in Mexico. He is one of the founding members of one of Colombia’s most popular bands in the 1960s, Los Corraleros De Majagual, but later focused on his solo career.
It’s Generation Bass (as in ‘base’ and not the fish) and it’s Friday Night, it can only mean one thing, DJ Mixfesssssssst!
DJ FLETCHER
This mix might just turn out to be one of my favourite mixes of this year, it’s original, unique, contains good source material and is quite inventive and the flow is cool. Oh, it also includes tracks by Beats Antique, a band I really love and who I have worked with in the past on a couple of my compilation releases as Shisha Sound System.
It’s by a guy called FLETCHER who comes from South Afreaka!!!
I LOVE it and I’m sure you will do too!!!
Unfortunately the only downside is that it’s not downloadable!!!! Why some DJ’s still insist on not allowing downloads in this day and age is beyond my comprehension but he can be forgiven for that cause the mix ROCKS!!!

DOMA TORNADOS
Great new mix from our homie Doma….this is just PERCUSSION HEAVEN!!!!!
Some of you peeps know just how much I love my percussion!
You will barely recognise some of the original tracks cause he’s just percussi-fried (nu made up word in true GB style) dem but they sound RAD!
Anybody who knew me (UMB) before Generation Bass will know I had around 10 commercial compilation releases which are still available worldwide.
3 of those were Tango compilations soaking in the Nu Tango scene and some of the trad stuff too.
One of my most exciting new discoveries during that period of Electro Tango was a beautiful young woman from Argentina called Vivi Pedraglio and I licensed a bunch of her material for the compilations. She has since become a good friend of mine and is simply now known to me as “VIVI BABY”.
Not only does Vivi create Electro Tango masterpieces but she also does a variety of other stuff too under her other alter- ego’s, DIAMANDA (Club) and HIJAS DEL RIGOR (Experimental/Downtemp/Ambient).
Here’s a gorgeous downtempo mix she laid down a couple of years back and please do go to her My Space to check out her Electro Tango stuff cause it’s awesome.
Waer Rock always comes up with interesting material for his mixes and this one ain’t no different, made up wholly of unreleased and exclusive material, which as a head start always makes a mix interesting even before you’ve heard it.
Here’s a mix that Celt Islam did for the BBC a little while back showcasing mostly his own dark and unique SUFI DUB tunes and some dark drum and bass junglism too.
Is Tommi a Bender? who cares but he does brilliant Balkan Nights in Amsterdam.
Here’s his latest Balkan mix soaking in the real atmosphere on one of his nights and staying true to the more trad and gypsy punk style stuff as opposed to bastardized watered down club stuff, which I usually do..lol
On request a new mixtape with just “BALKAN”-music…it ended up in a sorta “greatest hits/best of..”, so it gives an impression of the balkanparty scene in the Netherlands..

Probably some of you already know I (CABALLO) started my musical “career” as a death metal vocalist in the 90’s, and eventually began singing more and more to “electro hybrids” thanks to industrial, punk, hardcore and gothic metal late 90’s… few bands from the metal scene made me try to explore where they got that originality from their influences.
Dub War were formed in the town of Newport, South Wales in 1993,Their extra-ordinary blend of ragga/rap/punk & metal soon earned them a reputation across the world.
Dub War soon began to gain a reputation for a unique live performance, mainly due to Benji’s madman adlib. Several singles were released from Pain, including Gorrit & the now legendary Strike it.
watch it!
later DUBWAR split due differences with their record label , so Benji Webbe & Co formed SKINDRED
and finally HIT THE JACKPOT they deserved!!
Check their Vampire Killa
or this amazing Eddy Grant’s ELECTRIC AVENUE cover!!
Raw Bud a project made up of 3 former members of the raggae, rap, punk and metal band Dub War (Raw Bud spelled backwards) and Skindred, made a RONI SIZE antiremix “Rise Up”.
So i bet u r saying..What’s the link btw Metal and GB post? quite simple After Dubwar’s Step ta dis, Caballo (the one who posts here) was not the same ..lol
Dubwar’s remixes and BONG RA’s collaboration with Benji
Ok, we’ve had a bit of a winter clean up at the blog and as you might have noticed this week, we’ve had a change around in connection with posting times and number of posts.
We’ve had a lot of people saying they just simply cannot keep up with our MAAAD number of posts and consequently lots of things fall beneath the radar which is a little unfair to the artists that we put up here.
So from Monday last week we have been posting only 3 times a day, Caballo in the morning, Vince in the afternoon and me in the evening!!!!
Three muskeeteers, 1 post each…hahahah..lol…this will be the regular routine for the moment until we see how it goes.
Hipi and Zuzuka, Sticky K and Frederic will be dropping things in as and when.
TRACKFEST
So, as there are so many tracks to post that we just simply cannot fit in anymore, I’ll be doing a regular weekly trackfest round up whenever it is needed. Might be every Sunday night, could fall on another night or might not happen at all some weeks, flexibility is the key!
PLEASE NOTE:
These tracks have not been grouped together cause their bargain basement fodder or any shit like that!!!
Here’ a hot bootleg courtesy of PEO DE PITTE whose been getting massive support from the likes of BBC Radio1, Kiss100, Sinden, Fake Blood, Crookers, James Zabiela, Kissy Sell Out, Elite Force, Plump DJ’s, Afrojack and others…
Peo De Pitte aka Peo Häggström hails from the city of Stockholm, Sweden. After moving to London Peo have also been running his very own label FlatOut Records, the main home for releases of his two aliases Peo de Pitte and Haggstrom.
His trademark combination of rare groove beats and cutting edge synth action has resulted in making Peo one of the most exciting new producers to emerge. With remixes and releases on labels including Fingerlickin’, Global Underground, LOT49, U&A and Champion Records it is no surprise that he has won huge support worldwide.
Here’s 2 versions of the Riverside bootleg:
