Yes, the beautiful adventure continues and we are proud to present you two episodes of this great project, both in Panama !

Rehabilitation through music: Making beats in a Panamanian prison

Gamboa, Panama – Join Professor Pierce Freelon and producer Apple Juice Kid on a Field Trip to the rain-forests of Panama. They make a beat at a prison called Centro de Rehabilitacion El Renacer; with Professor Angel Sound – an incarcerated DJ who was blackmailed into muling cocaine for the Nigerian mafia – and his fellow inmate, who has an appetite for marconi and cheese. The “Prison Beat,” produced by Angel Sound and Apple Juice Kid at a studio called RAM, or Rehabilitacion a Traves de la Musica (rehabilitation through music), was created by found sounds around the studio/prison cell, which included audio samples of a leaky faucet, clicking handcuffs, guitar paying, and vocals. The collaboration is part of an ongoing Beat Making Lab experiment called “Field Trip,” where Freelon and Apple Juice Kid take their Beat Making Lab (mobile-studio) from the community centers where they are housed, to make beats in unlikely places. An upcoming Senegal Field Trip takes place at a health care facility.
Music from Panama Beat Making Lab, including a remix of the Prison Beat will appear on No Puede Conmigo – a free EP that premieres on Mad Decent on May 10. No Puede Conmigo EP features original songs written and produced by the youth of Portobelo, Panama and Apple Juice Kid as well as several remixes by guest producers. (from the PR)

Prison Beats

In this first video we see Apple Juice Kid and Pierce Freelon interviewing and making beats with talented Professor Angel Sound and two of his fellow inmates.

Angel”s words :

- ‘Working with Beat Making Lab was a refreshing experience, for the first time a group of people from the outside came inside the Prison to work in the new studio at R.A.M. program in El Renacer, Pierce Freelon and Apple Juice Kid are very good guys, amazing vibes and full of creativity, thanks to Khevin De Leon, a.k.a. The 13th Tribe colaborator of the program, and mutual friend is responsible of the conection and therefore of the whole experience. Im thankfull to all for the oportunity to show the world what we are doing here and to let people know why I ended up in here‘

AJk”s words :

‘My friend Khevin aka The 13th Tribe who I met years ago in Glasgow, Scotland hooked me up with Prof Angel Sound when I told him we were going to Panama with the Beat Making Lab. Khevin insisted that I make some music with Angel, and I am so happy I took the road trip to Gamboa where Angel has made this beautiful studio in a prison where I did not expect beauty.I was extremely surprised to find such a vibrant space, community and a positive energy. It is awesome to see the studio Angel has worked hard for, and the high quality of music and equipment that Angel has secured. Once you get past the barbed wire gate and the guards with handcuffs, there is a tropical forest surrounding the prison, with an amazing studio blasting unique creations by Angel and the other prisoners. The vibe was great and Angel made us feel very comfortable. We of course wish we were in the free world with him and the other inmates, but considering their situation, to me it seemed like they were making the best of it.’

BONUS Video Prof. Angel Sound Interview

In Prof. Angel Sound’s interview you get to know the story about the man, who he is and how he ended up in jail.

The name should ring you a bell as he has produced lots of beautiful moombahton beats over the last two years (at least).

We also remind you that Post World Industries released a digital album to raise funds for Professor Angel Sound. Listen&buy if you want to show your support to the man and his work !

GO is remixed by a dozen of the globe’s most potent bass music producers: from the epileptic dancefloor mindfuck of Munchi (NL), to the hard dub-wise refix of Max Powa (AT), with equally next-level contributions from Kosta Kostov (DE/BU), The 13th Tribe (UK/CL), Le Freak Selector (AR/ES), Caballo (CO/CA), Bigote (ES), Al Lindrum (DK/ES), Los Chicos Altos (DE/UK/ES), Lata (CL), Reactable Global Sound (ES), Al Pacheco (MX) and ICS (CZ). Compilde by Dj Mata Hari , Barcelona.

Ironically López is serving his sentence in a prison named “El Renacer,” which means the rebirth. This release marks the rebirth of the artist under his new alias of Professor Angel Sound. It is also the rebirth of our record label, Post World Industries, formerly run by Filastine, expanded now as a partnership with DJ Mata Hari. We are here to produce and distribute media against monoculture.

All the profits from this release go to equip the behind-bars music studio of Professor Angel Sound.

From the website.

Many, many thx to Khevin de Leon who helped a lot into completing this post !

You/Me EP [Vinyl out 13/05/13 Digital 27/05/13]

Expected with great impatience this six-track EP released on Diamond & Raw Records is promising of quality and sensitivity.

A blend of deep house and juked seapunk, the prods develop a beautiful atmosphere.

The synth are gritty and thick, the beats complex but not invading. A superb work.

We only regret that this EP includes only two originals tracks, that saying the remixes are sincerely great.

London based producer iO Sounds steps up for Diamond & Raw’s second release. Drawing inspiration from a diverse spectrum of electronic music iO Sounds has crafted a sound which is uniquely fresh.

The EP is a blend of warm chords, warped vocals and futuristic house beats, and features a substantial remix package. Mak & Pasteman and Forget Me Not provide hefty dance floor remixes of the title track, while Laksoa slows down the vibe with his deep house remix of Dirty Little Secret on the B-side. The digital release also contains a further remix, with Ado giving the track a squelchy electro makeover.

From the website.

The EP will be released on vinyl on the 5th of May and online on the 27th. This should be interpreted as a lovely gesture to vinyl lovers !

On Diamond&Raw Records’ SC you’ll find also two beautiful ambient tracks freely downloadable :

If you explore more you’ll certainly stumble onto the Boxettes’ Free track sweet remix by Forget Me Not and Bonobo’s Recurring remixed by Seath.

TRICKY

Though i thought i could afford not to mention the first free release of Tricky, this second one however deserves more attention. It’s not going to outmatch the tunes of Maxinquaye or Millenium, no, but it’s good enough to have you browse all vinyls/cds/wavs/whatever and play all your favorite tune of the artist.

Tricky – ‘Tribal Drums’ feat Francesca Belmonte & Tristan Cassell

This track is one the purest pristine sound i’ve heard. Very ambient sound inbetween future garage and seapunk.

The whole EP is available for a small price so if you wanna support the artist by buying his music…

I would also recommend you to drop an ear onto his EP Brighter Days, released in June last year.

TEMPORAL

Following up on Asa’s standout debut release, Bokeh Music presents their second installment, courtesy of Temporal. This young talent’s mature take on the Chill Out and Future Garage sound has been turning heads, opening opportunities alongside artists such as Veela, Bijou, and Tulpa to name only a few. On the Lost Sounds EP, this Canadian producer delivers four tracks, lush with warm basslines and soothing melodies sure to launch listeners into a calm bliss.

The EP is composed of four original tracks, strongly marked with a chillwave, deepstep ambience. The originality of the production certainly comes from the use of mysterious oriental voices, oscillating between Indian enchantment and echoes of old gospel sang by chained slaves. You can already get your hands onto that biutiful work as it was released on the 25th of March.

ASA&STUMBLEINE

Released in October last year this vocalled (and original) version of Tinderbox couldn’t get on the EP for sample clearance purpose.

EVENS

EvenS is a Nowegian young producer who has a very bad opinion of himself. I strongly suggest you give him some support as he really deserves it.

Using cycling voices and thick gritty sounds. Most of the tracks are based on a minimal layout with a melody changing slightly from one chord to another, with a richer layer added on top and clear piano lines are usually close to perfection balancing the heavily compressed oppressing subbass.

As we mentioned Stumbleine, EvenS did a lovely remix of one of his tracks. And the result is fairly pleasant !

TAQUWAMI

This artist released last year a really interesting EP called Blurrywonder on Void Youth which is according to them a wannabe record label/artist collective currently extending from Toronto to Virgina to Tokyo.

The music is very excentric, exciting, full of joyful electronic melodies completing high pitched R&B style vocals. I definitely recommend you to have a listen. Some might hate, some others will certainly love ! You can buy the music and get hi-quality files or download for free the tracks in lower format.

I love this strong end of the 80’s atmosphere, fiercely cheesy, egotistic and grandiose as the cinema of that time was trying to be : deep, thoughtful but with big explosions at the end. Really reminds me of me as a kid listen to old movie soundtrack tapes on my crappy player. I think an instrumental version of the track would have been perfect, but well…

BLVCK CEILING

Blvck Ceiling – Gone

Grimes – Genesis – (Blvck Ceiling remix)

This track without totally departing from the noticeable features of Black Ceiling shows more maturity and more dynamism. I’m not a fan of all the prods, merely because of the recurring synth patch, but this has the right feeling.

And here’s the “old” track !!! Javan Dee‘s remix of Elsiane’s Final Escape reworked by Dantini. Some of you might prefer the original but i kinda like the agressivity of the wobbling synth used in Dantini’s rework.

And to finish a short mixtape that covers some of the tracks blogged in the Biutiful Miusic chronicles :

Bringing the heat right on time has always been the expectation for Phoenix, Arizona-based producer Frank Mendez whose Moombassador Sounds – Volume 2 release sets the tempo of some of rap’s hottest club jams of 2013 to moombahton’s slowed and heavier pace. Vamos Promo continues to be an ambassador for tropical bass’ pop sound-of-the-moment, the three-man moombah-marketing-mavericks linking up with the El Cuco Records chief to once again showcase moombahton’s ability to better unify rap and EDM – the mainstream’s most prevalent sounds – in an appealing manner.

As always, Legitmix‘s power in allowing top remixes with such sample-heavy flavor to benefit both artist and remixer is showcased. Hits like Drake‘s Started from the Bottom, French Montana and Nicki Minaj‘s reggaeton-influenced Freaks, Lil Wayne‘s seemingly ubiquitous Love Me and Snoop Dogg sampling Tyga banger Dope all take on a newer and arguably club-friendlier flavor here, moombahton’s progressive sound feeling right-on-time.

With the weather slowly beginning to turn the corner and the on-set of sweltering nights forthcoming, this is the perfect collection to add to the digital crates to take a party from hot to sweltering at the drop of a track.

From press release.

This EP of club reworks contains four heavy club-banger tracks definitely marked with Sir Mendez‘ touch. Drake‘s rework – the heavy weight of this comp, my favorite because i already love the original -, has a nice lift-up with the neet, sharp and loud kicks and discreet but definitely efficient subs.

Not the first time that Mendez gets his hands on tracks with Nicki Minaj, we do remember his excellent Bees in the Trap rework, Freaks is a celebration to horns and dembow ! If you miss these elements that were parts of original Moombahton prods you’ll just love that rework.

Although I’m personally less onto the original track Love Me, the two following tracks are also lovely reworks and if you need that moombah flavour to boost up your Dj sets, Tyga&Rick Ross‘ Dope will certainly do it !

Tracklist :

1. Drake – Started From The Bottom (Mendez Rework)

2. French Montana ft Nicki Minaj – Freaks (Mendez Moombahton Rework)

3. Lil Wayne ft Drake & Future – Love Me (Mendez Rework)

4. Tyga – Dope ft Rick Ross (Mendez Rework)

You can buy and download the comp on Legitimix HERE !

Generation Bass : How did you get from the decks to the production ? What motivated you ?

Klipar : It came out naturally. But I remember when I first started going to parties I was paying attention to all the different sounds on each track and I thought I could do that. And also when I first bought a decent computer.

GB : Was production a necessary step to get a better image and more visibility on the musical scene ?

K : Yes, specially if you wanna export your music and your vision about music.

GB : Could you tell us how music work in Portugal ?

K : Nowadays we kinda have everything going on. We’re getting a lot more media support, which was not happening long ago. New clubs are now everywhere and I think it has grown a lot these past years.

GB : When working on a track do you always try to get it a tropical flavour or is it something secondary ?

K : It’s a secondary thing. I always start my tracks fooling around with beats. I think that “tropical flavour” comes naturally.

GB : There was a very interesting release with Branko from Buraka Som Sistema. Do you intend to intensify your collab with him in the future ?

K : Don’t know, maybe. I’ve known him for a while now and we always shared some ideas and tracks. We never know the future but maybe we will collab again.

GB : Any other musical genres you would like to explore ? Are there actually any musical genres you try to get away because they might be too caricatural or not fitting the expectations of your audience ?

K : Not at the moment. I think I mix so many genres on my tracks that sometimes I don’t even know how to catalog them. But I dont care, I do what I’m feeling at the moment. I start something and if goes more “grimy” or if it goes “housy” I do not mind, as long as I’m happy with the result.

GB : What do think about the way your music is perceived by the musical press ?

K : I dont know. I believe I’m not exposed enough to tell you that. However, I’m happy I got support from a few local radios as well as blogs.

GB : As your music includes lots of percussions have you thought of a live band or being accompanied by musicians while you play ?

K : Yes I already thought about something like that, maybe in a near future I can start working on something.

GB : Could you tell us more about your last EP and the remixes of Jack the Hustler, Shooting Horses and The Town ?

K : What I can tell you is I couldn’t be more happy with the result. Love all the remixes! I’ve been playing them for a few months and all the remixes do great things on the dance floor. Must thank all the dj’s/producers involved on this, thank you.

Released at the beginning of the month on Senseless Records 4-track “I” EP by Lenkemz is something i could not get past without talking about it.

Lenkemz spent the best part of 2012 banging holes in soundsystems worldwide with his homemade bass bombs. His productions found their way into the boxes of Diplo, Toddla T, Basement Jaxx, Rusko and Doorly to name only a small selection. Those included his first release for Senseless, the killer ‘Murder Micz’ with Dialect and the inescapable remix of Traxman’s ‘Blow Ya Shit’ also released by Senseless last month. In 2013 he has releases coming on Diplo’s Mad Decent, A Trak’s Fool’s Gold and of course more on Senseless.

This, his debut full EP, marries up two pieces of certified dance floor dynamite from different ends of the BPM spectrum. ‘Forcefieldz’ is a 150BPM hybrid of grime, footwork and soca with all the frenetic energy and bass pressure that made the ‘Blow Ya Shit’ remix such a runaway success. The flip, ‘Sewin Coins’, is on a 4×4 tropical tip before slowing things down to a hip-hop sampling reggaeton inspired break and building things back up to a wild climax.

(from Bandcamp site)

If you love Gato Preto, Buraka Som Sistema, Shake that Bass or Ackeejuice Rockers, that EP should find a nice place in your playlist.

This is so good ! I mean really good ! UK label Scold Recordings released a few days ago a great 4-track EP made of three original tracks and one remix. Exploring different genres the whole EP is strongly marked with a classy house flavour, vitamined by 8 bit melodies. If you feel a bit down this EP is certainly what you need to get away from your every problems and put back a smile on your face.

Tracklist :

1. Geek Boy & Kreecha – Unicorn Cascade

Unicorn Cascade is a moombahton banger, pure and simple. Blending global bass, with dancehall licks, with chopped vocals ride over a trademark moombahton bounce, this one is guaranteed to make the crowd jump.

Using multiple ethnic percussions blended to a nicely moombah style drum kick you slowly get into the track, then there’s the 8-bit melody, simple and refined with a sweet ambient synth layer and a discreet wobbles to give a lovely push up to the track.

2. Kendrick Shuffle

Geek Boy and Kreecha have moved trap on from its more simple 808-based origins to create a more grown-up take on the genre. It’s a track that has so many musical elements intertwined with the percussion that it takes this out of the club and into the home as a valid musical piece, rather than just a dance floor banger.

3. Venus ft. Geek Boy

This tune that oozes warehouse vibes and energy. This 120bpm groover has hugely interesting percussive elements that make it stand out from the other tracks in this mid-tempo sub-genre.

4. Kendrick Shuffle (Disgraceland Remix)

Disgraceland has taken this trap tune and flipped it on its head to create a multi-layered, complex slick of deep moombahton. The original elements of the track are kept in place, but with a more epic breakdown, which has been described by Sabo as “insane”. Disgraceland has ensured that this tune will be a afterhours favourite for a long time to come.

Here’s the new episode in the adventures of the great Beat Making Lab project. The guys released a few days ago the video of their work in Panama. Watch, enjoy and support !

During carnival season, Stephen Levitin (Apple Juice Kid) and Pierce Freelon paired students with percussion ensemble Barrio Fino; hip hop and jazz band The Beast; and nationally treasured vocalist Yomira – infusing afro-Caribbean comparsa rhythms into youth-created hip hop and electronic jazz beats. Most workshops took place at La Esqualita del Ritmo, an innovative program that provides free music and arts classes to local youth. The Lab also included a day-trip to the rain forests of Gamboa, where a beat making session took place a prison, which also houses Manuel Noriega.
The Beat Making Lab web-series launched March 13th with episodes from a community center in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. Portobelo, Panama is the second location to be featured on the series and will be followed by Beat Making Labs in Dakar, Senegal and Suva, Fiji. Every Wednesday viewers get a glimpse into the intricate processes of beat making, as well as the daily lives of young, aspiring musicians from very different walks of life. (From press release)

From the images we can expect something really great, so keep posted if you want to give your playlist a pump up !
