Kid Fonque is South Africa’s most consistently excellent and cleverly eclectic DJ, as at ease spinning dope downtempo and tech-house as he is dropping dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass.
His wide-ranging taste and attention to quality have lead to him compiling four mix-CDs (including a Sonar Kollektiv comp) and landing slots alongside Jazzanova, DJ Krush, Fink, Luke Solomon, Mr. Scruff, Rainer Truby, Gilles Peterson, Forss, Metro Area, Ame, Aaron Jerome and many more.
He describes his style as “soulful, jazzy, freestyle, fresh and always unpredictable,” but it’s these last two adjective that best sum up his skills – just check the sets on his Mixcloud page, which veer from house and garage to folk and wonky.
The latest issue from Kid Fonque‘s bright mind and brilliant hands is “a mix of South African underground music with a touch of International flair” titled Kid Loves South African Beatz, and it features some of the coolest producers plying their trade in SA at the moment, including (the recently-covered on Generation Bass) Felix Laband, The Layders, Tumi, Blackwhole and a whole bunch more equally brilliant beat practitioners.
Bonus: An ace and classic slab of jazzy hip-hop from Tumi And The Volume (who have members from both Mozambique and South Africa in their midst).
